Top 5 Tips for Sustainable Organizing
When it comes to organizing, there’s a lot out there about how it can enhance your peace of mind and bring balance into your life. Which is all true (check out this article for more info). But what many of us don’t realize is organizing your space can also give you the opportunity to live more sustainably. By thoughtfully decluttering, you can reduce waste, repurpose items, and—most importantly—contribute to a healthier planet.
On that note, here are my top five tips for organizing sustainably, including a quick and easy DIY project for repurposing. Enjoy!
1. Give items a second chance
Before tossing anything in the trash, consider if it can serve another purpose. Maybe an old jar becomes a container for bulk spices or a new plant pot; worn-out clothes can be easily turned into cleaning rags or used in craft projects. Embrace your creativity — so many items in and around your home can be repurposed with a little imagination.
2. Donate with purpose
Many items that no longer serve you might benefit someone else. Like Grandma always said, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Donate gently used clothes, books, and furniture to local charities or thrift stores. Consider organizations that specifically seek certain items, such as animal shelters needing towels and old sheets or schools looking for art supplies, shelves, and chairs. Donating responsibly ensures your items continue to be used and appreciated.
3. Sell or swap
For items in good condition that you don’t want to just give away, consider selling them or organizing a swap event with friends and neighbors. This not only extends the life of your belongings but also reinforces connections and helps build a sense of community. Online marketplaces — NextDoor, Facebook Market, eBay, etc — and local swap meets are great places to start.
4. Eco-friendly disposal
For items that truly can't be reused or repurposed, look for eco-friendly disposal options. E-waste, for example, should always be taken to designated recycling centers that can safely handle electronics. Got a stack of half-empty paint cans in your garage that you’ll NEVER use? Many paint supply and hardware stores offer recycling options for old paint. Check for local recycling programs that accept a wide range of materials, ensuring they don't end up in a landfill.
5. Sustainable storage solutions
Sometimes while organizing you have no choice but to buy new stuff. And nine times out of ten, that stuff is storage-related: baskets, crates, shelves, tubs, etc. In those instances, opt for storage items made from sustainable, eco-friendly materials — durable fabric, stainless steel, bamboo, responsibly sourced wood — because they’ll last longer, minimizing waste and reducing the need for replacements. Try purchasing from companies that follow ethical manufacturing processes or have a commitment to environmental sustainability. Or, even better, consider supporting local artisans and small businesses that produce handmade storage solutions, further reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
DIY Project Spotlight
T-Shirt Tote BagTransform an old t-shirt into a stylish and reusable tote bag with this simple DIY project. Cut off the sleeves and neckline to create handles, then stitch the bottom closed. And voila! You’ve got a new farmer’s market bag! This project requires minimal sewing skills and gives a new, practical use to shirts that might otherwise be discarded.
